It’s October 21, 2015 and still no sign of the Nike Air Mag high-tops worn by Marty McFly in 1989’s Back to the Future II… on precisely October 21, 2015. Actually, Michael J. Fox has just received the first pair.
Joining forces with The Michael J. Fox Foundation, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield, who had designed the original shoes for the movie, presented the sneakers to the actor with a handwritten note: “We wanted you to be the first to receive a pair… In addition to your personal pair, we’re creating more pairs for support in aid of the Foundation in 2016.”
So, ladies and gentlemen, the Nike Air Mags will finally be available next year and sold in aid of the Foundation.
Hatfield had created a limited-edition replica of the coveted sneakers back in 2011 that featured an electroluminescent outsole and a rechargeable battery. All 1,500 pairs were auctioned to raise funds for The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Watch the commercial spot below, starring the inimitable Christopher Lloyd, Bill Hader and Kevin Durant!
The Back to the Future trilogy is one of my favourites of all time. It is fun, different and unpredictable with characters millions of us have become so attached to (Marty, Doc and the DeLorean). It also predicted many things – such as the iPad, Facetime/Skype, virtual reality glasses, the Cubs at the World Series finals and countless movie sequels (Jaws 19), mostly in 3D.
And now that Marty’s Nike Air Mags are becoming a reality, we need the Hoverboard. Or the time-traveling DeLorean. I’d like to go back to the Eighties and pick up and a few things.
