Not gonna lie, I cannot stand Valentine’s Day. Its history is obscure and often shrouded in a veil that’s been romanticized to sell you greeting cards and gifts. I’ve never grasped the concept, all these women believing that this one day is what their relationship is based upon, expecting diamond rings, flowers and chocolates saturated in artificial Valentine sweetness from Mr. Right
Shouldn’t love — whoever and whatever it’s for — be celebrated every day? For example, I tell my shoes I love them almost each and every day. We’re sole mates. I’m even in the process of writing a love letter to one (and my lingerie, but that’s another post). Head over heels, I am. They may hurt my feet at times, but they look damn good doing it. (Especially when you’re dancing on the Valentine.)
Seriously though, you should love yourself first. It’s OK to say “Je m’aime.” Be your own Valentine and buy yourself something fab. Shoes are always sweet. Let’s see, I’ve OD’d on chocolate this week, I’m not too much of a bag lady, so my sole option is shoes. As the French would say, “Amour rime avec chaussures.” (“Love rhymes with shoes”… This actually rhymes in French.)
Let’s kick off with my two favourite pairs. Both are called Amanda and designed by the daring Sophia Webster. These shoes must be Gemini (takes one to know one) with a double personality: a platform heel and a wedge, both with a heart buckle. I especially like the retro pin-up style.
Charlotte Olympia gets hearts pumping with the Love Betsy booties and Sole Mates sandals. Or I could just go for the amazing Love Pandora clutch. (Did I say I wasn’t too much of a bag lady? Scratch that.)
Nothing says I love you like a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. The red soles are a surefire way to enflame your feet, I mean, your heart. The Cora collection has “I love you, feet” written all over them: Cora Glitter Mini/Specchio sandal with its transparent heart, the Cora black patent stilettos and the Loubiposh clutch with its neon heart.
Or you can kiss the sky, as Jimi sang, from beneath this transparent Lulu Guinness umbrella, sealed with a kiss. Red lips are always in – and not necessarily on your own lips. I love Lulu’s new take on her classic Perspex lips clutch for SS 15, the Metal Frame Lips.
My friend Mick once told me: “The way to a woman’s heart is through her feet.” It can also be through her tummy and too-cute-to-eat cookies fit for a stylista. Like these from Baked Ideas. And if you’re alone, at least you don’t have to share. Bisous!
